I always had it in my mind to carry on my long distance walking in some way once I had finished so I thought the best place to start was walking around the UK islands. As there are a lot of islands around the UK I decided to start with the most populated first and then maybe one day I may walk the uninhabited islands.
I have been visiting Guernsey since 1980, there has been a lot of changes on the island but the one thing that always seems to stay the same is the lovely port. As the weather was nice I decided to walk up to the lighthouse at the end of the pier, this was a first for me as I tend to give these a wide birth but I had plenty of time to take a leisurely amble today, it also allowed me to get a good picture of the castle.

So this was the last day of my journey, it had taken 6 years and 10 months to get this far. I had stayed in 150+ bed and breakfasts, I bought and wore 8 pairs of boots/shoes but only worn out 2 of those pairs (the rest are still going or have been binned due to blisters!), 3 different backpacks, numerous pairs of socks/hats/gloves/sunglasses and countless Ice Creams!!!!! A lot has happened in nearly 7 years, relatives have passed away, old friends have come back into my life and then promptly reversed back out of my life, my daughter was in secondary school when I started and then 6th form college and now University.

Suprisingly I woke up with the usual feeling that today was just another days walk, I had expected something else I guess, but what I had expected who knows?
I made my way out of Whitby at 8.30am and it was a completely different place on this quiet Sunday morning, just lovely.

The weather was fantastic I couldn't have ordered a better forecast for the day.
I chose what I thought was the correct route out of town but then it turned into a dead end!! lost again, I thought somethings don't change!!, eventually I managed to find my way to the top of the hill and what a view! The magnificent Whitby Abbey was sitting proudly at the top.
I had been warned that the walking was going to be tough today as there are a lot of hills and valleys between here and Scarborough. I stopped/got lost again! at the lighthouse at Beacon Hill.
The walking was still pretty easy at this point and as I made my way along to Robin Hood's Bay I did start to think what all the fuss was about......but then it happened......I looked at my map to find the route out of Robin Hood's Bay and then I realised that I had to go down the hill to the sea!!! If you haven't been to Robin Hoods Bay before, then you need to brace yourself for a steep climb/decent, its a real doozy!!! Once I had reached the bottom I walked along the front and started to climb back up the other end of the bay....what goes down must come back up!!!
I stopped at the top to take a breather and a photo at the same time. Very soon Boggle Hole reared its head and once again I was plunged downwards to sea level and then back out the other side. This happened a couple of more times (there are 6 between Whitby and Ravenscar!) until I arrived at the bottom of a ludicrously big hill just before Ravenscar, by the time I got to the summit of the hill I was very hungry and I have to say there isn't much in Ravenscar other than a hotel and a NT café, so I chose the Hotel which did me a very nice sandwich indeed!!

The walking became a bit easier after Ravenscar in so much that the hills/valleys were a lot less steep!! I carried on past Hayburn Wyke and onto Rodger Trod. My eyes were firmly fixed on the horizon constantly scanning it for any sign on the Castle at Scarborough, finally the path took a bit of a dip and I caught sight of it amongst the trees in front of me, I was nearly finished after a little under 7 years I couldn't quite believe it!!. I carried on past Cloughton Wyke, Hundale Point and Sailors Grave before I made the final decent onto the flat promenade at Scalby Mills, I stopped at the pub in Scalby Mills for a drink just (I think) to eek out the end of the walk for the last few minutes as it was less than a mile to go!

The North Bay promenade was busy on this fine Sunday afternoon and I walked purposely on to my finish point at the Corner Café. There was no one at the end to congratulate me which is exactly how I wanted it to be and how it was at the start of my walk on 18th November 2009 when I slipped out of the house on that wet Wednesday morning, I sat down on a bench at the Corner Café in between 2 elderly ladies and they paid me no heed, little did they know that I had just walked 5000 miles :)

The hills and valleys came thick and fast and my first stop of the day was at Staithes. Staithes was holding its annual arts festival where over 60 houses open their front doors to let people wander around them looking at the art that they have created, I find it amazing that in such a small place there are so many artists. I unfortunately didn't stop to browse at any of the artwork, again, maybe another day.
Staithes itself is one of the most stunning little coastal villages I have walked through, it reminded me very much of Cornwall.
The path continued up and down through Port Mulgrave, Rushwick Bay and Scratch Alley before arriving at the aptly named village of Sandsend. Sandsend is aptly named due to the fact that the beach from Whitby finishes at Sandsend! I now had the opportunity to walk along the 3 mile beach all the way to Whitby which I relished as the tide was well on its way out. Once I reached Whitby I had a real shock as I turned the corner to walk down the high street, there were people everywhere!! its a real shock to the system when day in day out you hardly see a soul and then you are faced with a Wall of people!!!! I had arrived in Whitby during "pirate weekend" hence the reason it was so busy.

After a very average nights sleep I went in search of a place in Seaton Carew to have breakfast as the hotel I was stopping in was bed only, I walked along the seafront and there was nothing open I fortunately had an "emergency banana". I glumly ate my banana as I walked out of Seaton Carew, the wind had got up overnight and this was significant to me as I would be crossing the River Tees today via the transporter bridge, if the wind was too strong then the bridge couldn't operate and I would be faced with a very long walk into Middlesborough and back out again.
There is only one road from Seaton Carew to Middlesborough and its a fast one! There is a path for about a mile and then its a case of diving in the bushes when the lorries come past. Middlesborough is very industrial and you can smell it before you actually arrive such is the concentration of Steel Works/Chemical Works.
As I walked along the busy road towards the Transporter Bridge I kept squinting to see if the gondola was running along the top of the bridge, eventually I saw something move and my heart lifted! I picked up the pace and made my way around to the departure point.
This was my second Transporter Bridge of my journey, the first one was in Newport in Wales. I love the whole concept of the bridge and it was a shame that I was the only passenger on the journey across the Tees, but it was 60p well spent! I chatted to one of the men who operate the gondola and he informed me that there are 6 transporter bridges in the world so maybe another project for me in the future would be to visit all of them!
Not long after the bridge I picked up the Teesside way Path, this runs from Dufton in Cumbria to South Gare on the north sea coast a total distance of 92 miles. This part of Teesside way I found myself on ran parallel with the railway line most of the way to the sea, however there was a problem when I reached a fence barring the way.
I had been warned by 2 different people that the route was blocked but I decided to ignore both of them! I ducked under the fence to the right of the blockage and walked along side the path until I found a way over the fence, it was pretty easy in the end and the path was clear all the way to the road. At the junction of the road/path there was a council sign saying why the path was closed, obviously the sign at the end I entered the path on had been removed.
I carried on along the Teesside way until I reached the signpost that marks the start/finish of the walk.
I had been looking forward to Saltburn and its superb funicular railway. I stopped for an hour and drank tea with my friends, but all too soon I had to wave them goodbye. I had now picked up the Cleveland Way and the first hill was a big un! I huffed and puffed my way to the top of the hill and then carried on along the cliff tops before dropping down into the lovely bay at Skinningrove. A very varied and rollercoaster days walking.

A day that started with what I thought was 23miles but turned into a leg busting 29 miles, at least this would be the last of the big cock up days!
As I walked across the bridge over the river Wear I noticed some new signage and that was the ECP. The English Coast Path has been in the planning stages for many years and at last some progress is being made to way mark all of the English Coast, the section I was walking along goes from Sunderland to Middlesborough.

The coast became a lot more rugged as my made my way towards Seaham, the ECP signage was doing a good job so far. I stopped in Seaham for my second breakfast just as a little rain was starting to fall, this had been my first (and as it turned out last) rain of the journey so far. I thought I had managed to dodge the rain but alas a big shower had me dashing for the trees and trying to get my brolley out! The ECP winds its way along the coast but then suddenly you have to take a right turn and cross over the railway line, I guess just like The Wales Coast Path a few farmers still don't want you on their land.
At Horden point I was able to scramble down the hill and make contact with a beach for the first time today, the tide was going out so I had 9 miles of glorious beach to walk, this would take me eventually to Hartlepool. The only down side of beach walking sometimes is when you have a pier to focus on in the distance, it all looks a lot closer than it actually is! So, 2.5hrs later I walked past the pier and followed the road around the Heugh Battery this then took me along through the surprisingly nice marina in Hartlepool and finally onto my bed for the evening in Seaton Carew.
The end of the walk was fast approaching and as I walked out of Blyth on a hot September day I thought that I'd be sorry when it was all over, its such a nice pastime walking in this sort of weather I couldn't think of a better way of spending a day.
I had to slap on a lot of suntan lotion before the walk as the sun was already strong. I headed along the beach towards Seaton Sluice and then followed the NCN 1 along the cliffs to St Marys Island.
Soon enough I was back on another beach striding across the sand towards Whitley Bay, I couldn't get the Dire Straits song Tunnel of Love out of my head mainly because it gives a big mention to the Spanish City which is located next to the sea at Whitley Bay. The Spanish City was having a refurb in an attempt to try and re capture its glory days I guess.
I passed through Tynemouth and its lovely castle on my way to the last ferry of my journey.
I managed to have a lunch break whilst on the ferry from North Shields to South Shields which was nice, once off the ferry I made my way around to the seafront at South Shields, as I walked along the front the sun was glistening off the sand and I thought it looked like Miami Beach, it didn't take long to realise that it wasn't, just a quick glance to my right and one again the word "Dump" came to mind.

As I come to the end of my blog you the reader will notice that I tend not to hold back on my opinions of certain places, but in the case of South Shields I have just cause to call it a dump as my father/mother in law moved here 12 years ago and I have been visiting them at least once a year and I have to say its just awful, no words can explain how terrible it is, so there you have it.

The coast path hugs the coast all the way from South Shields to Sunderland and the highlight is the Souter Lighthouse which is magnificent with its traditional red and white stripes.
By now the temperature was a balmy 27 deg and I was burning quite quickly so I was happy to see the last beach of the day at Whitburn Bay. Overall a great days walk and only 4 more days to go.
A day of many beach walks starting with a small one that turned into a 9 mile trek along Druridge Bay. I stopped at the start of my walk to take a photo of Coquet Island which is the main island of the Farne Islands it looked very picturesque in the shimmering morning sunlight.
As I was walking along the main stretch of sand at Druridge Bay I noticed up ahead some tents in the dunes to my right, but these were no ordinary tents these were the type you would normally see on the film set of a film about medieval times, very strange and then the people on horses arrived and just rode around in circles! even after I was way in the distance I could still see them riding around in circles!!
I stopped in Creswell for a celebratory Ice Cream (raspberry ripple). The coast path now turned to coast road and just after Lynemouth the road headed inland due to the proximity of a large power station by the coast. It was on this road that I spotted a woman coming towards me on the other side of the road pulling a 2 wheel cart, she stopped to rearrange her stuff and then went past me, neither of us made eye contact ( I figured that she was a bit stressed with the cart!) so we just passed, I did look round afterwards (as she had stopped again) and noticed a flag on the back of here cart saying " Anna's World Walk" I looked her up on the web later on that day and Anna is walking around the world to raise awareness of people who do not have clean running water. That brief encounter with Anna certainly put my walk into perspective....5000 miles PAH! that's just a walk to the shops compared with what Anna's trying to complete.
The road wound in and out of Woodham eventually arriving in Newbiggin- by- the - sea. Once passed Newbiggin I managed to get onto the beach at Spital Point, after yesterday's disappointment at not being able to cross the river at Alnmouth I decided to have a go at crossing the river just before Cambois, and I was lucky as it was low tide! I took off my boots and socks and went for it! The river was reasonably fast and deep in the middle but I ploughed on regardless and made it across safely :).
Just before North Blyth I headed inland and the rest of today's walk was along busy roads and very forgettable.
It was a really nice start to the day as I wandered across the 2 mile bay. At the end of the bay is Football Hole and I sometimes think "how did that bay get its name?" I walked on along the coast and suddenly I turned a corner and there was Dunstanburgh Castle, its quite impressive.
I skirted around the side of the castle and then suddenly I was hit by a wall of people all walking towards the castle, I couldn't quite believe how many people were on the coast path, I could see Craster in the distance and it was like a long snake all the way to the village!
The path hugged the coast through Craster, Boulmer and finally arriving in Alnmouth. At Alnmouth I had taken a look at the possibility of wading across the river Alne, but I think I was about 1 hour the wrong side of low tide to attempt it so I plodded inland towards Hipsburn, though on the upside I managed a nice photo looking back towards Alnmouth.
After cutting inland I walked back towards the beach but decided to stay on top of the sand dunes as the tide was coming in, the sand dunes between Alnmouth and Warkworth are very high and as I was walking along them I heard a buzzing noise, the next think I saw was a light aircraft flying past me above the beach lower than where I was standing! I had noticed on the map that there was a point on the Holy Island causeway called "refuge" so I walked straight at that point, a hour later I was sitting on the tarmac brushing the sand off my feet.
I could see from the map that I had no choice but to walk inland, and at some point I had to cross the East Coast Mainline which I have to say I was dreading. So on I walked. I had noticed some big marquees in a field, when I reached the marquees I asked what was going on and was told it that it was a weekend Inde music festival. Everyone was packing up and I picked my way though the tents that remained, just as I was heading past an empty tent I was stopped by a lady who accused me of being part of the "crack den tent" that had kept everyone awake for most of the previous night, I obviously pointed out to her that I was a walker who was in fact lost in the field and had just happened to stop next to the "crack den tent" to look at my map, thankfully she soon realised I was "normal"! and pointed me in the right direction to exit the field.
I managed to cross the railway line without incident (thankfully it was Sunday) I then walked along a lot of roads before arriving in Bamburgh and its fabulous castle.
The day was a bit grey this morning as I made my way firstly upstream along the river in Eyemouth then downstream towards the coast, just before turning south along the coast path something caught my eye in the sea, I stood still for a while and there they were Dolphins! what a treat and a fantastic way to start the day.
I promptly got lost in Burnmouth as I had managed to find my way in but couldn't find my way out! fortunately a local man pointed me in the right direction which was between two houses and via someone's garden!!! no wonder I couldn't find my way out!
The coast path now started to follow the course of the railway line and its nice to give people a wave when a train goes by, I like to think it cheers them up!!
At Megs dub I was passed by 3 runners who I saw in the distance stop at the Scottish/English border to take photos and I thought that they must be on some sort of trek like mine it was a shame that I didn't get chance to have a chat to them. Soon enough I also reached the Scottish/English border and paused for a while to reflect on my journey around Scotland I let out a loud WooooHooo as I passed through the gate much the same as I did when I finished Wales.
The path continued to run parallel with the railway line and at Needles Eye I bumped into the gentleman who had give me instructions on how to get out of Burnmouth! he was leading a rambling group, we had a quick chat and then we were both on our way. After a long and torturous trip to my start point I was very glad to see the coast path sign at Cockburnspath, this however was not without incident because as I was making my way towards the path I came across a path closed sign, now normally I ignore these signs but this one had workmen around it so it meant business!!! I quickly took the detour and I was soon on the coast path skirting around the lovely harbour at Cove.
I made my way around Pease Bay and then had to head inland for a while but the day was nice and the path was fantastic, just before Dowlaw there is a monster up and down hill that I had been warned about, and it was a true lung buster!! my journey up the hill wasn't helped by the rotting corpse of a dead sheep, phew what a smell!!! Even though there isn't much left of Dunbar Castle its still looks very picturesque perched on top of the big rock over looking the harbour.
The John Muir Way will take me all the way along the coast to Cockburnspath where it meets up with the newly formed Berwickshire Coast path. I made my way out of Dunbar via the golf course and stood watching some golfers tee off and by some sort of miracle all 3 of them managed to find the water with their first shot! I was crying with laughter inside!!!
The path hugged the coast and I was soon at the impressive Barns Ness Lighthouse.

Originally I was only going to walk to Tyninghame which is 7 miles short of Dunbar but as tomorrow is Sunday there was no bus back to Tyninghame so I just thought I would "bite the bullet" and take the extra 7 miles on the chin.

I was still walking along the John Muir way for a while until it headed inland towards Gullane , I veered off to the left across a very fine wooden bridge onto the Luffness links, this in turn leads to the Gullane links and eventually I am back on the coast at Gullane Bay where I stop for a moment to take in the view.
Once again I am the only person on the beach as its probably too far for most people to walk, there is a good path that leads me around the bay and as a bonus the tide is on it way out. I made my way around the bay and took a picture of the small islands just off the Brigs of Fidra.

North Dog and South Dog

As you can see the islands are called North and South Dog, North Dog is the one on the left with the lighthouse. The bay leads onto Broad Sands and because the tide is out I can walk "route one" all the way to North Berwick.
I stop in North Berwick for a sandwich and finally the sun makes an appearance, so as a reward I treat myself to an ice cream. :)
There is a road out of North Berwick that follows the coast and it soon turns into a coast path, eventually the path runs out and I find myself making it up as I go along, I manage to scramble over a dry stone wall which leads onto the A198, even though its an "A" road its nice and quiet on this Sunday afternoon. The "A" road takes me down to Castleton where the impressive Tantallon castle resides.

Tantallon Castle and Bass Rock

As you can see I managed a nice photo of the castle and Bass Rock, they look really close on my photo but Bass Rock is a good mile or so out at sea.
Not long after Tantallon Castle the road takes a left and then becomes a track taking me around the bay at The Gegan this in turn takes me down to Peffer Sands, eventually I have to head inland along a dead straight road called Lime Tree Walk I really dislike roads that are this straight as they seem never ending. After turning left at the end of the road I finally make it to the village on Tyninghame this where I should have stopped for the day as even by now my feet and legs were starting to scream at me, but instead I carried on! Just after Tyninghame the John Muir Way makes a welcome return to the coast after its meanderings in the Scottish fields of West Lothian, I followed the path to the coast and cut across the beach at Dunbar (as I had spotted a footbridge near the golf course). Finally I arrived into Dunbar at the end of my day, thoroughly knackered but at least tomorrow was a nice easy day.

I stopped for breakfast at the hotel under the Forth Rail bridge, as I sat there I reflected on what had been a fantastic few days walking the Fife Coast Path, it had been a long time since I had walked along a continuous coast path and not had to head inland or walk through farmers fields (with me usually getting lost!) it had been a real treat.

I was now back to "making it up as I go along" which is OK with me. I started today by walking around Peatdrught Bay and then heading east past Dalmeny House.
The path eventually ends at the river Almond and you have to walk the irritating 2.4 mile up stream and down stream to get back to the coast, it may have been irritating but it was still one of the nicest detours I have ever taken.
Once I was back on the coast the boardwalk was wide and full of roller bladers, cyclists and joggers....I thought I must be near Edinburgh.
Scotland's capital loomed large in the distance with the peak of Arthurs Seat sitting proudly in the middle of the hustle and bustle. I skirted around the outside of the city via the Port of Leith and eventually arriving in Portabello with its fabulous sea front.
Not long after Portabello is the town of Musselburgh where I picked up a new coast path The John Muir Way, this path would take me all the way along the coast past Dunbar, occasionally it heads inland but most of its route is along the coast. The final few miles to Port Seaton were along the new coast path and I eventually arrived tired and hungry at my accommodation for the night.
Today was my last day stopping with my daughter in St Andrews, it had been a lovely visit and I will never tire of visiting both her and the town.

I arrived in Dysart at my start point with my full pack on my shoulders again, it had been a nice few days without it but after a mile or so I didn't really notice the extra weight.
I made my way to Kircaldy, this must be one of the biggest towns I have walked around since Aberdeen, so much traffic and people! This town was closely followed by Kinghorn which at least was a little more sedate.
The weather was improving a little today and I actually caught a glimpse of the sun as I walked through Elie and onto Earlsferry. There is a nice hill just after Earlsferry that gives you a great view over the bay and the golf course.
The grey mist had descended on my walk again as I made my way out of St Andrews. Today was to be a full day of hugging the coast along paths the likes I hadn't seen for many a mile.
The path wound its way around the coast up and down I went, scrambling over rocks (this part of the FCP is tidal) walking along empty beaches, it was just sheer bliss. After a few miles I came upon Buddo Rock named I presume because it actually looks like and image of Budda. You need to look carefully....and maybe squint your eyes a bit!!!
The path just before Boarhills cuts inland, but thankfully all too soon I was back on the coast path passing Airbow Point and then skirting around yet another golf course at Kingsbarns. I walked onto to Craighead and and the coast path took a right turn heading in a westerly direction, which was nice because the easterly wind was now at my back, the path dropped down the coast to Crail. Crail was the first of a succession of really lovely small coastal villages along the south coast of Fife, after Crail came Anstruther with its famous Fish and Chip shop, apparently people come from miles around to sample their food, unfortunately it was closed when I arrived :(
I only had a couple of miles before arriving at my final destination of the day at Pittenweem, today had been a great walk along some reasonably hard terrain but a walk I'd like to do again when the weather is much nicer.

A nice easy days walk today starting with a bus ride to the Tayport Bridge, the sun was out again which was very nice to see.
I had now picked up the Fife Coast Path which starts inland at Newburgh and finishes at Kincardine, I was only going to walk the Tayport Bidge to Inverkeithing section which is more or less most of it!
The walk took me along the Tay estuary until I reached the village of Tayport, here I headed into the forest of Tentsmuir which was just lovely to walk through, everything was so quiet.
The path eventually lead me out of the forest to Leuchars and onto Guardbridge. The road in Guardbridge had been blocked at one end due to Gas works, it was surreal walking along what is usually a very busy road, I even stopped and talked to a local man who was cutting his hedge and commented on how nice and quiet it was along this road, he was loving the peace and quiet.
All too soon I was back on the busy A91 heading full steam to St Andrews, I stopped briefly to take a picture of the golf course but as this is my 6th visit in the last 2 years I've seen everything that needs to be seen in this beautiful town.

I was feeling tired this morning, and as I walked along the seafront at Arbroath my legs felt like there was lead weights tied around them, I have always found on these walks that day 3 or 4 are the hardest and today was the day! Though you will notice one thing from the picture below, and that is Blue Sky!! yes the sun finally made an appearance!!
,

I had to head a little inland at the start as (or so I thought) there was no path along the front and therefore I had to walk along the cycle path next to the A92, it transpires that there is now a brand new cycle path that takes you from Arbroath to Dundee hugging the coast which are not marked on any OS map..... yet!.
So I trudged wearily along the coast passing through Carnoustie, Golf St and Barry, I had wanted to walk around Buddon Ness but due to the MOD red flags flying I was unable to, this did surprise me as it was a Sunday but you could hear the pop, pop pop in the distance of gunfire. The cycle path carried on through Monifieth and onto Broughty Ferry with its magnificent castle.
I walked on through the industrial areas that lined the docks around this area and finally arrived in Dundee, this is where things went a bit haywire! I wanted to walk across the bridge towards Tayport but bizarrely I couldn't find a way onto the bridge for pedestrians,. I had noticed much to my dismay that there were signs up either side of the road carriageways stating "no pedestrians or cycles on the bridge" after searching for 20mins for a way onto the bridge I just gave up, I had by now had enough of this walking malarkey and I just wanted a sit down. I walked back into Dundee and caught the bus, as I sat on the bus I decided to see if there was a way across the bridge for walkers etc and much to my annoyance there was!! the walkway was in the middle of the 2 carriageways!!! I must have walked past the entrance 3 times and just not seen where to walk!! So, I got off the bus and walked back into Dundee and caught the bus back to St Andrews for my 3 night stay with my daughter who is at the University.

There is another good cycle path that took me over the county border from Aberdeenshire to Angus. Once over the border I walked along the cycle path until I was able to cut through some woodland to reach the beach, and what a beauty! I was beginning to miss my beach walks and even though this one was over in a matter of a few of miles I really enjoyed the feeling of sand on my boots again.
I quickly made my way through Montrose stopping only to stock up on essential supplies (sandwiches etc!) I then made my way along the road to another of my favourites "the Lighthouse", the one at Scurdie Ness is like a lot of lighthouses these days and is privately owned, I mean who wouldn't not like living in a lighthouse? sheer bliss for me!!
After lunch I took on the 2 mile walk along the beach at Lunan finishing at Corbie Knowe where I picked up a farm track that took me all the way to Auchmithie, according to the waymarkers I was now on the Angus Coast Path which like a lot of these paths is not marked on my map.
At Auchmithie the track turns into a great coastal path that is well maintained and the views are spectacular.

The day was grey again and this was to be the theme for most of the next 10 days. I made my way out of town largely uphill and took a picture of the bay.
I followed a path around the bay via Downie Point and headed full steam towards my highlight of the whole 11 days....Dunnottar Castle, I had been looking forward to seeing this castle for the last 200 miles and I wasn't disappointed! Its just amazes me how they managed to build such a fantastic castle with so little technology and equipment, its just mind blowing!!

I carried on around the bay at Dunnottar following an unmarked path until I reached Gallaton where I cut inland and picked up the A92 this was quite a busy road but I soon branched off and headed towards Crawton. At Crawton I cut inland again via a farmers field! and picked up a small minor road and this eventually took me to Inverbervie. Thankfully from Inverbervie there is a great cycle path that hugs the coast taking me through Gourdon and Johnshaven. I stopped at the pub for a cuppa in Johnshaven and to ask the "locals" about the rest of the route along the coast (this I have found is always a good way of getting a good idea of what lies ahead!) they poured over my maps and told me that I could get all the way around to St Cyrus, the only tricky bit would be around the caravan park at the Milton of Mathers. So I carried on towards St Cyrus, picking my way through the shingle beach at the caravan park eventually arriving at my second "do not use the coast path as it may be unstable" sign of the week! I of course ignored it and carried on via a very precarious looking castle at West Mathers.

I restarted my walk from the bus station in Aberdeen and there to meet me was fellow coast walker Andy Phillips. Andy had got a little further along the coast than myself so we walked around the harbour chatting until it was time for him to catch the bus to his start point at Nigg Bay. I carried on around the bay at Aberdeen following a good track all the way to Girdle Ness and its lovely lighthouse.
Next stop was Nigg Bay with its great beach, here I stopped for a cup of tea and waited for Andy and waited and waited, after 20mins I carried on walking, I guessed he must have carried on ahead of me!
Not long after Nigg bay there was a sign for the Aberdeenshire Coast Path (which wasnt marked on my map, again!) so I decided to follow the signs, just before Greg Ness there was/is a sign informing you that the path is closed due to a landslide, looking at my options of either walking along a very busy road next to a railway line or walking the senic coast route I chose the latter!! (I thought I could just wing it by climbing over the farmers fence if the landslide was that bad, as it turned out it was just a small step over a bit of mud!!!!) The walk to Cove Bay was really nice with plenty of Geos and great views, all to soon the path came to an end so I stopped and asked a local if I could go any further along the coast but I was unable to do so due to a big quarry at Colsea Yawn.
At Cove Bay I bumped into Andy again, we had a chat about the route so far and then walked out of the village via the cycle route, it was a bit uphill out of the village and due to my long legs I carried on ahead of Andy. The road wound its way past the quarry at Colsea and the village of Findon, eventually I turned off towards Porthlethen Village, here I picked up the Old Coast Road which was basically a farm track but it was nice to think that once upon a time this was the main road along the coast. I asked someone in the village if I could walk all the way to Newtonhill along this road and they said "yes" however a car pulled up next to us and they said "no" as the bridge over the river at Newtonhill had been washed away in the winter floods, but the overall opinion was that it should have been repaired by now so I carried on regardless!! The track took me through Downies and past Clashfarqher Bay and then eventually down hill towards the bridge/non bridge, as I turned the corner I could here rushing water and there was the bridge, hooray!!!! (and a splendid job they had done repairing/replacing it!!) I climbed to the top of Newtonhill to take in the views and eat my sandwich.
I now had to walk out of town and pick up the very busy A90 for a few miles towards Stonehaven, fortunately there is a very good footpath alongside the road and it wasn't long before I branched off along a much quieter road and the final few miles into Stonehaven.
It had rained heavily all night and was still raining as I boarded my bus back to re start my walk at Newburgh. Luckily as I got off the bus the rain stopped! I made my way to the beach and the highlight of today, 11 miles of route one beach walking!!
The wind had really whipped up and it was great to stand and watch the kite surfers ride the wind and waves. I carried on along the beach (via GC15) mile after mile of sand, eventually I had to cut inland in order to cross the superb Bridge of Don.
All too soon the my 9 days of walking had come to an end in the city of Aberdeen, This 9 days has been some of my favourite walking in all of Scotland and what a contrast the east coast is to the west coast, on the west coast I barely saw a few miles of beach whereas on the east coast you can't swing a cat without hitting one!Walk around the British coasthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04686701393855063096noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2068806726522710757.post-43629192414430903552015-06-27T11:09:00.000-07:002016-04-14T01:21:00.612-07:00Walk 212Peterhead to Newburgh 22miles

I made a futile attempt at the start of today's walk to walk around the bay at Sandford, but try as I might I could not find a way through so I opted for a short trek along the busy A90 which took me along the coast to Boddam. Just before you turn left towards Boddam I spotted a car park and my curiosity got the better of me, I decided to climb the small mound next to where most people had parked and when I got to the top I foolishly decided to head across land towards the town. I say foolishly now because in all of my treks its always a case of "being wise after the event" I made my way across the field and it soon became apparent that my route to town was going to be difficult as in front of me was a 12ft fence and to the side was a 6ft wall, I luckily found a broken part of the wall which reduced my climb to 5ft! I clambered over the wall and ended up in a small housing estate where I was finally able to make my way towards the coast and the fantastic lighthouse at Boddam.
Once I had made my way out of town I walked along the very busy A90 for 2 miles before taking a left turn along the much quieter A975, after a mile or so I was able to take a well signposted track towards the Bullers of Buchan which are natural arches formed by the sea and well worth a look.
I carried on along the coast finally stopping off at Cruden Bay for a spot of lunch. After eating I walked along the beach (GC No14) towards what looked like a track (on my map) up to the cliff tops, thankfully when I arrived at the end of the beach the track was signposted and what a view from the top looking across Cruden Bay!
After Collieston I looked at my map and made an assumption, and that was all sand dunes are the same size! How wrong could I be? Very wrong as it turns out, the dunes after Colleiston are the size of cliffs and covered in grass so look in every way the same as any other coastal cliff!
After what I thought was going to be a difficult nights sleep (youths using the street as a racetrack around the hotel!) I made my way out of Fraserburgh. As there was is no bridge across the small river that runs into the sea at Cairnbulg I opted to walk along the road instead ( GC No11) I then turned left down the B9107 and headed towards Inverallochy.
